A useful rule: if the appliance is younger than two thirds of its typical lifespan and the repair is less than 50 percent of the cost of a comparable new model, repair usually wins. Past that age, or when repairs start stacking up, replacement deserves a serious look. The sections below put real numbers on that rule for each appliance.
We give this same advice on service calls, including when it means telling a homeowner in Brookside or Woodland Hills that a repair is not worth doing. Honest math builds a business better than a forced repair does.
