Why Is My Dryer Not Heating?

Short answer: when a dryer tumbles but makes no heat, the usual suspects are a clogged vent, a blown thermal fuse, or a failed heating element or igniter. Airflow comes first.

Technician testing a dryer heating element and clearing lint from a vent in La Vergne

If your dryer is not heating, check airflow before anything else. Clean the lint screen, then run the dryer and step outside: you should feel a strong, warm flow at the exterior vent. Weak flow means a clogged vent, and a clogged vent also blows thermal fuses. If airflow is strong and the drum stays cold, the element, igniter, or a safety fuse needs testing.

This is the single most common laundry call we get, and our dryer repair page covers the service side. The good news: most no-heat dryers are repaired the same day once the real cause is found.

The Airflow Test That Tells You a Lot

Start the dryer on a heated cycle and find the vent outlet outside your home. Hold your hand near it. You want a steady, strong push of warm air. A weak trickle, or air that feels damp and hot inside the laundry room instead, means lint is packed somewhere in the vent run. Long vent runs in ranch homes and two-story laundry setups around Brookside and Carothers Crossing clog faster than short ones.

  • Clean the lint screen every load, and wash it monthly if you use dryer sheets. Residue blocks air you cannot see.
  • Check the vent hood flap outside. It should open fully when the dryer runs.
  • Look behind the dryer for a crushed flexible hose. That one kink can cut airflow in half.

Parts That Stop the Heat

PartWhat happens when it failsNotes
Thermal fuseNo heat at all, sometimes no startUsually blows because the vent is clogged
Heating element (electric)Tumbles cold, no warmthCoil breaks with age and heat cycles
Gas igniter (gas dryers)No flame, clothes stay coldGlows weak or not at all when worn
Cycling thermostatHeat cuts off too earlyClothes take two or three cycles
Timer or control boardHeat works on some settings onlyTest before replacing

One warning that matters: replacing a thermal fuse without cleaning the vent just buys a second failure. The fuse is a safety device. It blew because the dryer got too hot, and the vent is the first place we look for why. Vent cleaning is included in our appliance maintenance service for exactly this reason.

Gas Dryer or Electric Dryer?

The checks differ a little. Electric dryers need a full 240 volts, and a half-tripped breaker can let the drum tumble with no heat at all, so check your breaker panel for a partially tripped double breaker. Gas dryers that tumble cold often have a worn igniter or closed gas valve after other work in the home. If you smell gas at any point, stop, leave the area, and call for help rather than troubleshooting further.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my dryer take two cycles to dry clothes?

Long dry times almost always mean restricted airflow. Clean the vent run fully, not just the lint screen, and dry times usually return to normal. If they do not, the thermostat or element needs testing.

Is a dryer that will not heat safe to keep using?

Running it cold wastes energy but is not usually dangerous. The real risk is the clogged vent behind many no-heat faults, which is a fire concern. Get the vent checked promptly.

Can a breaker cause a dryer to tumble with no heat?

Yes, on electric dryers. The motor and the heating element use different legs of the 240 volt supply. One tripped leg leaves you with a tumbling, cold dryer.

How often should dryer vents be cleaned in La Vergne?

At least once a year for most homes, and more often for long vent runs or large families doing daily laundry. Humidity here makes lint clump and stick inside vents faster.

Why did my dryer stop heating right after I replaced the fuse?

Because the cause is still there. A thermal fuse blows from overheating, most often a clogged vent. Until airflow is restored, new fuses will keep failing.
